MonsDRAWsity by Deep Water Games is one of my favorite games to break out with large groups. Unlike other party games, it doesn’t depend as much on you knowing the other players likes and dislikes to make jokes work, but instead it is about your ability to describe things from memory.
One player is shown an image of one of the wild and wacky monsters in the box and they have a minute to commit it to memory. All the details - arms, legs, teeth, mouth(s), and other identifying features, trying to think of the best way to verbalize what they see before them.
After sixty seconds, the card is flipped over, the image out of sight and now the other players pull out their drawing pads and attempt to sketch out what the other describes.
You’re essentially playing as a team of Men In Black, sent out to get a description of the accused creature before Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith comes over and flashy-thingys the the eyewitnesses.
The fun is that even though the eyewitness knew they were going to be quizzed on what the monster looked like, it is easy to feel those details slip away or realize you focused way too much on how many eyes, but never looked if it had legs at all! Or maybe it didn’t even have legs??
Yes, short-term memory is garbage after a few minutes, especially when the pressure is on.
This game is great for all ages because even kids can enjoy the drawing or describing (though you might want to let them look at the image rather than hide it).
I’m eagerly awaiting the sequel game which was funded on Kickstarter a few years ago. Unfortunately, due to some issues in the parent company, there have been lots of delays but I know once it arrives, the new box will be full of even stranger creatures to describe.
Have YOU played MonsDRAWsity? Does it remind you of any other games?
Let me know in the comments!
