The Steam Spring sale kicked off yesterday and run through March 20. Hundreds of games on the site are discounted, and some of the best board game adaptations are among them! This is a great time to fill up your virtual shelf with great games!
Some of the best adaptations of modern board games are made by Dire Wolf and almost their entire catalog is discounted. BONUS: they have also discounted them on iOS and Android stores! Since these games offer both live and turn-based play, they are great for on the go so putting them on a tablet or phone is a great idea. These are the ones I own:
Root: A Game of Woodland Might and Right from Leder Games is a fantastic war game. Dire Wolf has adapted several of the expansion boxes to digital also, so this is a game that keeps on giving. Don't be fooled by the cute cover, this game is complex! I am glad had the digital edition to teach my the rules before I dived in at the table as each faction has their own set of rules and ways to earn VP. Also, the MUSIC in this digital adaptation is fantastic.
Dune Imperium is another war game set in the sprawling sci-fi world of Dune. Lots of strategy as you build up your faction alliances and decide which battles are worth winning...and which one are worth a sacrifice. With several ways to trigger end game, you're never sure who will turn out the winner when the final cards are revealed.
CLANK! is a modern classic, a game about diving deep into a dragon's lair and trying to get out with the most loot. A bit of push your luck along with clever deck building, the video game adaptation has great animations - especially when the dragon roars and you watch the cubes fly across the map, whacking the thieves.
Everdell is a great pick if you want a chill town building experience. Place your workers to gather resources and use them to build or attract residents. The artwork from the physical game is part of the digital game and it is just as gorgeous rendered on the screen.
I haven't played Munchkin, though I wasn't s huge fan of it IRL, but people LOVE that game of feisty dungeon crawling and stealing things from their friends. But just going by the other adaptations DW has put out, I'm sure this one is solid too, if you're already a fan.
You can find links to all the Dire Wolf Deals on their site here!
The Wingspan adaptation by Monster Couch is also discounted 50% off for the sale. While BGA has a solid port on their site, this digital edition has beautiful music and animations. Monster Couch has also been steadily releasing the many Wingspan expansions as DLC. Another great pick for games to play on your computer or phone or tablet.
The adaptation of Calico, Quilts and Cats of Calico is 20% off. I have played 'Calico' many times and I played the demo of this - it's true to the game but has a quirky twist - there is a solo story-mode! If you like puzzles that really make you think - don't be distracted by those cute cats! You're going to scritch your own head as you try to figure out where the best place to put that quilt patch is.
Of course, there is the most important game for any board game fan to have in their Steam Library - Tabletop Simulator is 50% off! Many games that are crowdfunding now upload mods to TTS so you can try before you pledge. The Workshop is overflowing with game titles, you can try out almost any game out there. I used to have a regular Cthulhu: Death May Die game night with friends scattered all over the country (one of them owned the actual game, not sure if he has ever gotten it out of the box LOL).
There are a LOT of games in the Steam Sale worth checking out! Definitely give it a browse, you could get quite a collection going.
Anything on sale that you've played and suggest I check out?? Let me know in the comments!
As much as I loved the digital adaptation of Wingspan, I am playing less and less digitally so I will skip these sales… after 8 hours at the computer the least thing I want is to play in front of the computer again :)
Not board game adaptations but tangential to the interest: TCG Card Shop Simulator has been a lot of fun! I like to listen to an audiobook and chill out with this game. You can even stock some board games in the shop, but most of the focus is on opening the TCG packs.
Also Balatro if you haven't gotten it yet!
