I’ve been trying to curb the crowd funding habit I fell into during 2020 - too many times I would back a game that was 3000% funded by the end and would appear in retail before it delivered to my door. I’ve been a lot more intentional about who I pledge my money to now, trying to find games that need that bump up to 100%.
So, with that being said, I am definitely going to take part in the crowd funding campaign for Tricky Goblins by Scott Kegler from Owl Dragon Adventures.
I’ve played Tricky Goblins twice now - the first time at PAX Unplugged 2022 and again at PAXU ‘23. Both times the table had a mix of gamers with different favorite games, but everyone had a good time.
At it’s core, Tricky Goblins is a trick taking game. You play cards, win tricks, and get coins. But the twist is that you are a goblin and you have your own secret plans you are trying to fulfill based. These plans consist of getting the dice on the table to match a particular set shown on your “plans” card. Complete a plan and you’ll get way more coins than you would just winning a trick.
Some cards let you change a dice number plus or minus. Others let you swap colors. And sometimes you have to let fate decide and roll the dice, hoping to land on the numbers you need and not what you’re fellow goblins are working towards.
The game will be crowd funding on The Gamecrafter starting February 23 through March 7. What is unique about their model is that The Gamecrafter is going to be the company making the game. It’s a giant pre-order campaign EXCEPT the more people that take part in the crowd sale, the price of the game actually goes down!
I really like this model - it’s not about revealing stretch goals or tiered level of backing - you support the game, you get the game that everyone else gets and the more friends that do the same, you all benefit! No tricks!
So click the “Wishlist” button on the Gamecrafter page to be alerted when the crowd sale starts and help this game become a reality!
